Late-life onset - some of your symptoms may be age, not MS

I was diagnosed with CIS at age 66, about 14 months after onset of symptoms in March 2020, when I was 65.

I have found that some of my symptoms are age-related. For instance, for a while I had severe dizziness. It turned out that this was something common in older people, called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It is easy to treat with something called the Epley Maneuver (you can even do it at home). It worked really well and I've had to re-do it only once.

Frequent peeing is another. For me, that started with menopause. The incontinence started with the CIS, but the frequency was a problem for several years before the CIS.

And, of coure, memory problems...menopause did a number on my recall ability. Words just disappeared; I would lose my train of thought in the middle of sentences. This has improved in recent years.

So if you are, like me, "up in years" - some of the challenges you are dealing with may be age, not MS.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and experience. Sometimes it can be hard to decipher the difference between aging and MS symptoms. Be well, Doreen (Team Member)
