Shake It Up!
I just want to start this article off by saying, I DO NOT SELL THIS PRODUCT, nor am I trying to push it on anyone in any way. I just wanted to share how it has helped me. I am also curious to see if anyone else has had any positive experiences with it. The product I am writing about today is Shakeology by Beachbody.
What’s in these shakes?
I have been drinking Shakeology daily for the past two years, and I love it. Shakeology is a shake I usually drink every morning. It is a “superfood” packed protein shake or meal replacement that is used to help people lose weight, reduce junk food cravings, provide healthy energy, and supports your digestion and regularity. It is filled with protein and fiber, and also has antioxidants, phytonutrients (a substance found in certain plants which is believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent various diseases), vitamins, and minerals. It is both a prebiotic and a probiotic and contains digestive enzymes which is what helps this shake support digestion and regularity.
Doing my research
So, what made me decide on having Shakeology in my life? As many of you may already know, I was diagnosed with MS in 2004 at the age of 14. I had so many years where I didn’t take care of my body properly, and I especially didn’t do anything to focus on diet and exercise. After having my son in 2015, that all changed for me and I decided at that time that I was ready to do whatever it took to live a long and healthy life. And, after doing a lot of research, I realized the importance of diet not just on your everyday health, but on your health as an MS patient as well. When I first heard about Shakeology, I was of course skeptical. It seemed way too expensive, and I had major doubts that a simple shake could transform my health in any way. However, after doing more research and realizing that my overall health and wellbeing were worth spending that extra money, I took the plunge.
Part of my routine
Now, everyday having my shake is a must for me. I love knowing at least one meal each day is already planned for me. Making the shake is extremely simple, and while some might not enjoy the taste, I have come to crave it. You can do a simple shake with water or almond milk, and the powder or you can add more even more nutrients to it by blending it with a banana, peanut butter, spinach, other fruits and veggies, etc. Seriously, the ways you can get creative with it are endless. After making the decision to focus more on what I was putting into my body, I began to see improvements. My diet before was a lot of junk, and I didn’t pay any attention to the amount of sugar/carbs and fat that I was digesting. After making that change, my diet is more balanced. When I say balanced, I’m not meaning strict. I make sure to have a healthy combination of fiber, whole grains, healthy fats, lean protein, fruits and vegetables. While I still enjoy sweets and other carbs, I limit myself much more on those things. As I mentioned, I focus a lot more on whole grains and healthy carbs such as sweet potatoes, bananas, brown rice, quinoa and things of that nature. But, I do enjoy a cookie (or 10) every once in a while, I have to tame that sweet tooth!
Enhancing my diet and overall health
I say all of this to note that the reason I chose to start drinking Shakeology is because I felt that it would only enhance my diet and overall health. This daily shake has 70 different types of natural whole food sources that are from all over the world. Some of these include flax, kale, chia, green tea, goji berry, and whey and pea proteins. The list goes on, but I won’t make you read through all of that, haha! And, I especially love the fact that its derived from natural and healthy whole food sources and has so many amazing ingredients that you won’t just find in other every day shakes. With MS, we tend to have quite a few vitamin deficiencies, so I really enjoy the fact that I am able to get so many great vitamins and minerals in one shake rather than having to swallow another handful of pills. My biggest praise for Shakeology though is what it does for my energy levels and my immune system, and I’ll touch more on that now.
Realizing the impact on my energy levels
There have been weeks at a time the last couple of years that I have had to miss my shakes. For a while, I honestly just didn’t want to spend the money anymore, and I wanted to see if it was really making a difference in how I felt. Holy cow! The first couple of days without my shake I was literally a walking zombie. I don’t have a ton of extra energy in the first place, but as I said, I was skeptical in the beginning, and didn’t think drinking this shake could do all that much for me energy-wise. Having to go without it made me realize the energy it does give me. It’s not an overwhelming or jittery kind of energy. It’s more of a natural energy that allows me to have the motivation I need to get things done throughout the day. It has also helped me push through some of that overwhelming fatigue that I battle.
Boost to my immune system
While I am so thankful for the extra boost energy-wise that it gives me, the best thing about Shakeology for me is what it has done for my immune system. With MS, my immune system has always been on the lower side. I would tend to pick up anything and everything wherever I went, and I was sick often. Now, I have a 2 year old toddler (can we say germs?), and in the last 2 years, despite taking care of a sick child on multiple occasions, I have been able to avoid whatever it is he’s had. If I could insert the praise hands emojis right now, I would! My immune system is stronger than it has ever been, and while some may think I’m crazy to think a shake could do that for me, I know without a doubt it has. I haven’t had to go the doctor for being sick in 2 years! I think I had forgotten what that felt like. Now, I do still occasionally feel like I’m coming down with something, but after drinking my shake and some Airborne or Emergen-C, the feeling is gone within a few hours. I’m not naive enough to think that this will keep me healthy forever, but what it’s done for my immune health so far is AMAZING. While I don’t know for certain that it has helped me with my MS in any particular way, other than the natural energy, I do know that over the past 2 years I haven’t had any relapses or new symptoms.
What diet and exercise has done for me
As I said, I do not sell this or write this to push it on anyone. I won’t be making any money from Shakeology or Beachbody by writing this, but I wanted to share what a balanced diet, exercise, and my daily Shakeology has done for me. It’s not a quick fix or miracle cure by any means, but I can honestly say since beginning this journey to better my health, I feel better than I’ve ever felt. And, that’s as a busy mom to a crazy toddler (which, if you’ve had one, you know what I mean ;)) and as someone with MS and thyroid issues. Shakeology may not be for you, and that’s perfectly fine, but I do encourage everyone with MS to take that leap and focus on your overall health, nutrition, and exercise. I was never, ever a healthy eater, and exercising was just a no for me, but now that I’ve seen the difference it’s made in my life, I never want to go back.
So, now, I’m curious. Have any of you had any positive experiences with Shakeology, or changing your diet/exercise?
