What tips do you have for managing stress over the holiday season?

The holidays can be a stressful time, especially when managing life with multiple sclerosis. Share any helpful tips for managing holiday stress with fellow community members to support them during the holiday season!

  1. One of big keys for me being able to handle holiday stress is preparation. Not only reminding myself not to take on too much, but also thoughtfully reminding my friends and family of the difficulties I might run into. Sometimes a thoughtfully worded note reminding them that the holidays can legitimately cause some health problems for me can be extremely helpful in getting people past hurt feelings. Reminding them, that of course I want to partake in every activity and event, but that it simply may not be feasible. I like to mention that it's not me failing them, it's my body failing me and them. A little awareness goes a long way.

I also like to make sure that if I do go to a family function, that I stay aware of my body and try to have a room I can go take a timeout in. Sometimes laying down for a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle can be extremely helpful.

    1. Online shopping early enough and during holiday sales. Always works for me and lessens a huge amount of stress and unwanted anxiety. You’d be surprised, after the summer season, how many items you can find on clearance. Take advantage of free shipping and try different websites for price comparison. I save so much money with this tip, especially if on a strict budget.

      1. Exercise and meditation helps me deal with any stress.A good diet helps as well but that can be difficult during the holiday season.
A punching bag with a photo of the aggravating relative pasted onto it would help as well.I have not tried this yet but did put it on my Christmas wish list.

        1. I especially liked the comment on the photo and punching bag, I have a sister in-law I would put on it year around. Potter

          1. I think we all have someone like that in our lives, Potter! I hope she doesn't live too close. Best wishes! - Lori (Team Member)
