How can I get my doctor to test for MS?

I have not been tested for MS although I present with about 95% of the symptoms. How can I get my doctor to test? I do not have insurance. I have qualified for low cost or free clinics but no one will test. Can anyone suggest how to get testing done. I am only getting worse and I don't know what is wrong with me.

  1. I am so sorry you are in this situation, Sharonbarker! It can be hard to find testing when you are uninsured or underinsured. Here is some information from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation that you may find helpful -- "The uninsured may be able to obtain the care they need through charity care. Most states have a government agency in charge of charity care, but the people who need it are often unaware that it exists. Your best bet for obtaining charity care is to contact your hospital. Hospitals typically have all the information you need to apply for and obtain charity care, including eligibility information and the appropriate forms. Charity care programs typically require that the applicant be ineligible for any type of health insurance coverage, including Medicaid. You may need to provide financial information demonstrating that they are unable to pay."

I will say that getting the actual testing may be the most challenging part for you. I would definitely contact your local hospitals and find out about any state charity options in your area.

For you safety, it may be best to try to get any form of insurance possible before getting tested. I realize this may be very hard, but some insurances still may be able to deny coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

Have you tried to find our if you qualify for Medicaid?

Also, here is some information on an MRI assistance program from the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. This program may be a very good fit for you. I highly recommend contacting them sooner rather than later, as sometimes funds for programs like these dwindle as the year goes on -- https://mymsaa.org/msaa-help/mri/. There are some very specific criteria you will have to meet to qualify for this program.

I hope this information gives you some ideas and I sincerely hope you are able to get the testing and medical care you need as soon as possible.

Good luck and keep us posted, if you would like to do so.

    Best, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.
