Breathing Issues?

  • By DarlaKaye

I don’t really want to call my doctor about yet another issue but I will probably have to. Lately I’ve had trouble getting a deep enough breath. Sometimes it’s worse than at others. is this an MS thing? Anyone else having this trouble? It’s not on exertion, it’s just pretty much all the time. What do you do about it? I really don’t want to go on oxygen. Both of my husband’s parents spent the last years of their lives on oxygen (neither of them smoked, they just had different diseases that affected their lungs – pulmonary fibrosis and sjogren’s). I think it would be so hard on my husband if his wife ended up on oxygen as well. But I’ll do what I have to do if I get uncomfortable enough. I’m hoping it’ll get better but wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

When fatigue comes on strong I feel like I can’t get enough air, very similar to what you describe. I tend to sigh a lot and feel I NEED to get as much air into my lungs as I can. When this happens, I rest as much as possible.

Am new to this forum and wish to delete above comment because it cut 1/2 of it off. I mentioned that I was sorry to the ladies who are also struggling with breathing problems and much more, guess it was too long but I saw nothing where I was running out of characters, nor can I find a delete comment section.
I tried to go back and modify it by erasing it all and that didn’t even work. My apologies for the nonsensical, 1/2 post

Hi seairra! I deleted your post as you asked! Don’t feel like you need to apologize. Things like that happen from time to time. We’re glad to have you here! Thanks, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.

I have been diagnosed with MS for 32 years. I have experienced breathing problems for most of that time. I have never connected it to MS. I have always thought it was due to anxiety. I starting taking meds for anxiety but continued to have the issue of feeling like I could not get a deep breath. I just recently realized that this might be a symptom. I will mention it to my neurologist when I see him.

I think that’s a great idea, Carol! I hope your neurologist is open to discussing your breathing issues as possibly being related to your MS. Best of luck! Thanks, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.

Hey everyone–I’ve been trying to figure out if breathing problems have a connection to MS. I’ve run into your comments

before I have done any actual research. I understand the trying to get a deep enough breath. I have a problem with

shortness of breath.to the point of panting!! I never know when, but sometimes it’s just a matter of walking from one room

to the other. Or doing something then when I’m finished, I’m out of breath as if I’ve just run a mile. I’ve not seen my neuro

lately to ask him about it. I get that “MS hug” too and that’s wacko. Is that more of a spasm?

I spread this out…so much easier to read! Having major blur in left eye today.

I am having extreme shortness of breat causing me to be unable to talk at times. I feel chest tightness and fear it is a cardiac problem so I will get that checked out. But wondering if others get this “panicked feeling of discomfort and hard to breathe sometimes. When it passes I feel really crazy like I don’t know what just happened.

Hi wandaholt! I am sorry you are experiencing this issue! Please do contact your physician as soon as possible to make sure that you are not having any cardiac issues. Also, sometimes panic attacks mimic symptoms such as the ones you mentioned. “Panic attack” is kind of a misnomer in my opinion, because it’s not necessarily caused by panic or fear. If you think this sounds like something you may be experiencing, you can read more about it here — https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/panic-disorder-agoraphobia/symptoms#. It’s not uncommon for people living with MS to have the occasional panic attack.

Also, I am not a doctor and am in no way trying to diagnose what you are experiencing. I just wanted to share what others in our community have dealt with in regards to your symptoms.

I hope you doctor has some answers and that your heart is in good shape!

      Best, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team member.
