Can MS Patients be Organ Donors?

I have a progressive form of MS. I was recently diagnosed (6 months ago), but I have been fighting the symptoms for many years. I recently discovered that I have to renew my drivers license this year on my birthday. I have been an organ donor for at least 25 years, and have always had that added to my drivers license when I renew it every five years. It is something that I feel very strongly about and believe everyone should be a donor, but with my recent diagnosis came the thought that if my organs were donated, would my organs infect the recipient? I know were my personal life journey is heading, but the thought of not being able to help someone else with the gift of an organ breaks my heart. Can anyone answer this?

  1. I was told two days ago that I can still donate blood even though I was diagnosed, so if they can take my blood why not your organs... I am an organ donor as well, and it crossed my mind as well.

    1. - I was told the same thing, that I can only donate blood, and not any of my organs. I would hate to give anyone else this MS

  2. Hi,
I had to remove my name from the bone marrow donor list. I called them personally. They said ms was a auto immune disease, so it failed the criteria.
I think it is probably too risky for cancer patients. That is all I know about.
If you should find out, please let us know!
