Depression

Been diagnosed for a little over 2 yrs. Depression has hit all time high. The last year I've barely been able to work, my credit rating has plummeted, I'm about to lose my new used car. I file for disability in less than a month, but some days I feel like such a burden to my kids (all in their 20s) and that I will lose everything so what's the point of going on. I try not to feel sorry for myself, but with Bill collectors calling multiple times a day and no immediate hope in sight, it seems better to end it all. I can't be the only one going through this, I need your advice on how to cope with this all consuming depression. Thank you.

  1. I am so sorry you are going through this, Jstbnmee. Please know you are not alone. Many of our members can understand the depression that can come with a life-changing condition like MS. I know your finances are tight, but if you can, I recommend talking with a professional (like your physician or a therapist) about your depression. Even a physician can describe an anti-depressant, if necessary. It's okay to say you need help sometimes! And please note, that some generic anti-depressants can cost as little as $4.00 per month. Here's some basic information on the common treatments for depression -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/symptoms/depression/. I could link you to a TON of articles on our site about depression; it's that common. Here is one I thought you might relate to -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/severe-depression-getting-help-hopeless/comment-page-1/#comments (please check out the comments following the article as well). Also, here is another article about battling depression that you might find useful -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/depression-feeling-inactive-and-unaccomplished/. Sometimes, it's not about tackling the whole battle at once. In fact, for most people, it's about taking small steps to get back to 'you'. Find something each day that makes you happy. Or, if not happy, something that you can enjoy. Whether it's watching cat videos online or doing puzzles, or smelling your favorite scent or catching your favorite commercial on TV. Yes, little things like that. There are lots of treatments, both natural and pharmaceutical, that you can take advantage of. Please keep reaching out, just like you did with this post! See, this was a step in the right direction already! And, please, if you are feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to reach out to the Suicide Hotline. You can chat with someone anytime of that day or night; online or on the phone -- http://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/. And please, let you doctor know. Thank you for reaching out. You can do this. I hope your disability filing goes smoothly and quickly and please keep us posted on how you are doing! Best, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.
