Spotlight: Spring Cleaning

As spring rolls in many are getting the itch to spring clean after all the dreary winter months. So, this April we’re highlighting spring cleaning with MS. For many living with multiple sclerosis household chores and organizing can be both physically and mentally challenging though. Do you have any tips or tricks for cleaning when you’re unable to do certain tasks or really don’t feel up to it?

  1. I recently had company coming for a weekend visit. My husband actually used 2 vacation days to help me. I have to pace myself. The television helps me the most by working during commercial breaks or every other one. Being motivated is the hardest part and I had read prior to this gargantuan effort that inviting company to your home gets one motivated; it certainly helped me. Now if I can just find bottled energy...

    1. Hi gmc,

Sometimes finding the motivation can be the hardest part! Working during television breaks is a great tip though! Thanks for sharing with the community!

  2. TV works and I find that if your are at your desk a lot like me baby wipes help with the dirt and dust on the desk and computer, also you can use rubbing alcohol for the computer screen while you sit here.

I have to keep moving because if I don't my dad's house would be a pig pen. His wife ( stepmother ) has 4 dogs and I have 1 so we have 5 and 2 of her female dogs come in heat at the same time so the tile floors throughout the house have to be swept and moped every other day and I'm the one that has to do it with my MS and degenerative bone issues. My sister ( step sister ) doesn't help me at all no one does. What would take a normal person maybe 45 min to do takes me 1 1/2 hours or more depending on how much pain I want to be in for that day and the 2 days that follow. I stop and sit to make my legs and lower back stop hurting for 5 min-45 min

    1. Hi JanG1360,

Keeping little wipes at your desk is a great idea! Pets are a great source of companionship but as you mentioned sometimes they can require some extra cleaning! Thanks for the post and for being a part of our community!

  3. I try to make it a "game" I have trained myself to do a little coloring in an adult coloring book, followed by no more than 1/2 hour of doing chores. I think of 3 things that need doing then get going. Sometimes I just do one or if I am feeling energetic, I will do all three. This works for all household chores, not just spring cleaning.

Today, I started to color and found myself wanting to get up and do things in between. I guess it has become a good habit.

    1. Hi Nancy W,

Sounds like the coloring books is a great habit! Glad to hear you found something that works for you! Thanks for sharing with the community!
