Brief (1-2 hrs) of balance loss

My dad is recently dx, 75 yr old, he has -2 hour periods during the mornings where he feels “spacey” in his head and is unable to coordinate his movements or balance to safely ambulate. He will take a nap for 1-2 hours, wake and be fine to ambulate with no walker and minimal balance deficits. This is usually after eating breakfast and correlates with meds, but no meds have changed since this started. He is on Avonex for MS and takes seizure meds for a seizure disorder since he was in his 40s.

  1. Hi, and welcome! While I am sorry your dad is doing with a new diagnosis of MS, I am glad you found this community. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have an questions about MS. While we can't provide medical advice, we are happy to help in any way we can.

Has your dad talked to his doctor about these episodes he is experiencing most mornings? His physician will be in the best position to offer some possible tips or treatment.

I will say that it's not unusual to experience periods or 'spaciness', weakness, fatigue, etc, etc with MS. But, since these episodes seem to correlate with his meds/breakfast, I would be interested to see if his doctor thinks there is any connection.

I think it's a good sign that the symptoms do fade after a nap, but I understand your concern about this change in your dad's overall health and ability to get around each morning.

I do hope other community members can chime in here and offer some input for you.

And I think it's lovely that you are doing what you can to learn about MS and to help your dad with this latest diagnosis.
