My Boogie Shoes

Hey y’all!! We have all spoken on our great topic of MS. What want to know is what type of shoes do you wear around the house, out and about or special events are more comfortable for you? I find myself gravitating towards flats or something with 1 inch heel. I tried to put on wedge shoes, block heeled shoes and even kitten heeled shoes with the use of my rollator. It may work for some but I have had more falls, scraped knees than I can count. I use to have to go into the office before pandemic and the company I worked for had a dress code. Needless to say being a boomer you know I adhered to policy. Shoot Fire I was used to wearing heels and being cute!! Now I’ve said it. I could not wrap my feet around flat shoes. I fell in parking deck so many times hitting knees, head and elbows. I’m surprised I escaped without broken bones but had huge broken pride. My co- workers looked at me like I had two heads just wondering when I was gonna do them a favor not wear heels cause they were tired of scraping me off cement. I even tried using just my rolling backpack to stay afloat. I would go to the food truck and ended up walking sideways on flat surface. Did I tell y’all I loved my heels and dressing up? Well I knew I had MS and they knew. We were all healthcare professionals.
The last time I fell had to go to ED. Knees and elbows a mess. I had rollator but didn’t want to give up interaction and friends in office.
I went home, went to Neurologist and he sent me back to PT. After about 8 weeks PT discharged and told me I could not ambulate at home or anywhere without rollator and had to wear flat shoes. Well bout that time I was working from home and cognition waning with lack of attention to detail.
So what type of shoes work well for you guys? I wear lots of flats with some type grip under bottom of shoe but in assorted colors. I tried wearing sports shoes but soles uneven. I’m a cool flat heeled girl now and loving it.

  1. This is such a great question, ! I hope you get lots of input from the community. One of our advocates asked that same question back in 2014. Here is the article: https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/search-perfect-pair-shoes. You'll find lots of answers in the comments. I am sure shoe choices are different now, so it would be great to get some updated answers. Wishing you the best! - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Lori , I love shoes and I have a pair Birkenstock sandal I wear at home and Keds sneakers seem to work best for me. I wear Aerosoles and shoes from Talbots called driving shoes. I like these because of safety treads underneath and they come in different colors. If my sons insist on me going out with them and wives to some fancy place I have a pair 1/2 inch black heels I wear along with my trusty rollator to the event. I read the article and very informative. I’m in shoe departments awhile because I too have to try on , see how they feel, walk in them, feel them see what type grip is underneath. People dont understand what a great comfortable pair of shoes mean to MSers.

      1. Hi . I am glad you have found at least a few pairs of shoes that work for you. Keen closed-toes sandals are great for summer activities as well. They lessen the risk that you will catch the edge on something and trip and they are super comfortable. I have gone for hikes and runs in mine, despite a couple of foot surgeries that make it difficult to wear any shoe. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. majority of my shoes closed toe. I don’t like bumping into stuff. I’m glad you can go hiking. I walk in neighborhood but that’s my hike right there. It’s up and down a few hilly areas and strengthens legs pretty good. We have gotten through storms for now so maybe we can enjoy outside a few days. Let me know if you run up on any more shoes recommended. Thank you.

    2. Hi ! Footwear is definitely an important topic to me (https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/importance-good-footwear), it can make a huge difference. I have a pair of Crocs that I wear at home that fit well, have good traction, and feel great on my feet. I have a separate pair that I also wear out sometimes. I also have a couple of pairs of Nike FlyEase that I wear out that are easy to put on but still comfortable. I also have a pair of Crocs Flip Flops that I wear our a lot, just something about the Crocs brand of flip flop that makes me feel a bit more secure when walking. Now, I know I'm probably not the most fashionable, but thought I'd chime in anyway because I feel footwear is important!

      1. it is important and thank you for your response. When I did floor nursing I wore crocs and they are comfortable. I found myself a little more unsteady if I don’t have on a flat surface or the bottom a little wavy. I will try diffent shoes again to see if my unsteadiness abate.
