Sudden (Near) Paralysis

Hello Community,

I'm so happy to have found this because I've been alone for most of this fight, I was diagnosed roughly 22 years ago

I have a progressive form of MS, not sure if the neurologist said it was primary or secondary, it was seven years ago he told me this

Like many or most of you, I live with numerous, debilitating symptoms and not many solutions, at least none that I have discovered

A few days ago, an intense muscle cramp in the back of my upper/right leg occurred when stretching my legs half asleep in the morning, I've never had a muscle cramp in that area, nor one so painful

Somehow I got it to settle down and sort of fell asleep again but upon fully waking thirty minutes later, the same leg was impossible to move

I eventually got to a sitting position and waited for a bit, hoping it would respond but nothing happened and I called an ambulance

This leg is very weak on a good day but I have enough movement in it to walk with a cane or walker around the house

The emergency department detected a fever and put me on IV antibiotics, I remained in the hospital for four days

They ran lots of tests, ECG, blood culture, regular blood work, and chest and back and leg xrays

Sometime on the second day, the leg started to come back

They didn't see an obvious reason and consulted with an MS clinic a couple hours away from my town, I live in Ontario, Canada by the way

The clinic basically concurred in that an infection likely exacerbated existing damage

I got home two days ago and the leg is almost where it was before this happened, which again is a very weak leg but enough movement to walk around the house with a supportive device

The same leg has mild arthritis in the knee and hip but that's not the reason for the weakness and immobility, it was in bad shape from MS prior to the arthritis diagnosis, quite sure the arthritis developed over time from the awkward gait

I'm happy to be home and have enough movement to get to the bathroom, etc., but it was a frightening experience that I'm worried can happen again, and double worried if it does, will it come back

Has anyone here had a similar experience?

I would be grateful for anything anyone could share of similar nature

  1. Hi RossJV,

We're glad you found this community!
My goodness, that had to be scary. It's great to hear you are home and back (almost) to where you started.
As you may be aware, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs are quite common with MS.
Whether this is what you were experiencing, I cannot say for certain. However, this pain can range from mild to intense. This article provides some additional information that you may find interesting:

In the meantime, I do hope others will chime in here and share their personal experiences.
Sending positive thoughts for some answers to this mystery,

    1. Thank you very much for replying and for sharing these resources, leg weakness and periodic cramping is something I deal with all of the time, but never paralysis, can't explain how much this has been playing on my mind

    2. I'm so glad to hear that the conversation here has been helpful. It can be so validating and comforting to talk with others who have similar experiences. Feeling seen and understood is not something that comes easily when living with MS, so when you do experience it, it's like coming home!
