Bus trips are out.

I am a retired person with MS. I enjoy senior social meetings and most people there don’t even know I have MS.But one thing I can’t do is go on all day bus trips. I am fine at a 2 hour meeting but sensory overload and fatigue get to me after that and I need to go home and rest. A few years ago, I signed up for a bus trip and on the day of the trip, I just knew I couldn’t handle it. So I lost the money for the ticket. I have to remind myself that I can’t enjoy bus trips, even as all my older friends go for it.

  1. I know bus trips can be an awesome way to get out, visit a new place, and hang out with likeminded people, . But, they can be draining. I am sorry you aren't able to enjoy them anymore. And I bet it's tempting when your friends say, "Oh, but this one won't be that long! The bus has a.c. and comfy seats! I bet you could do it!". But, you know your body best and what you can handle.

Still, it stinks to feel like you're missing out, I know.

    Best, Erin, Team Member.

    1. Missing out on that bus trip and losing the ticket money must have been disappointing, but listening to your body and prioritizing your health is commendable. It's not easy to make those decisions, especially when you see your friends participating in activities you can't join. Recognizing and respecting your limits takes a lot of self-awareness and strength. By understanding your boundaries and taking care of yourself, you're ensuring you can continue to enjoy the activities that work for you. You can't go wrong with that. Stay encouraged, Latoya (Team Member)

      1. I completely understand your hesitation to sign up to participate and then realize that it will just be too much. That took Smarts to back out even if losing ticket money. I've had to Stick to My Best Interests when it comes to participating in family outings. My children just keep thinking (hoping) that I can maintain my previous energy levels (not to mention my balance issues). Hiking on rough paths is not fun at all. However, you are very lucky to have the senior meetings available. I wish that I would have the same (or anything similar) available. The local "Center" has many rules n regulations for acceptance into membership with them. You are required to attend a certain number of days per month or lose your membership. There's a "trial" period to see if you "fit" into their expected mold. There is a lunch every day which you have to pay for. Transportation is extremely limited which makes it even harder to get a membership. Oh, let's not forget that during the trial period, you are not allowed to attend on days where groceries are given out to members. Sorry, just really disappointed/frustrated that there are no other options available. And this is a county provided service. I guess that I expect too much. When you mentioned the sensory overload, I had an Aha moment realizing that i am not alone! Thank you for sharing and again, sorry for the long, detailed response. May you find other activities better geared for your needs.

        1. Thank you@Silver Oma for the reply. i love yoir name. Your reply reminded me to be grateful for the senior meetings. There are 2 of them nearby, one government supported, the other in a church. They both meet monthly. Maybe you could see if there is a church sponsored grpup nearby. Ours does not require church membership. It costs $15 a month.
