Does anyone know...

I am wondering if ocular migraines and buckling knees are typical to ms?

I have "light shows" on occasion that seem to zigzag and are very distracting. My neurologist told me that these are occular migraines. There is no pain t all and last about 20 minutes to half an hour.

Also one of my knees buckle randomly with no fore warning, and it is a violent, jarring motion. I just started wearing a knee brace for this.

  1. Hi, !

I am sorry you are experiencing these issues. First off, we always suggest talking to your physician any time you experience new or worsening symptoms, for your safety. It sounds like you have discussed the migraines with your neurologist, and that's good! Does he/she have any suggestions for managing, treating, or preventing the migraines?

That said, there does seem to be a link between MS and migraines. You can read a bit more about it here -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/migraines. Also, check out the many member comments following the piece.

And, while it's good to get your knee checked out to make sure something else isn't going on, but knees giving out at random can also be related to MS. It can be a frustrating issue and one that's hard to plan for, but it sounds like you are planning ahead and wearing a brace. Does the brace work pretty well?

    1. Hi Erin,
thanks for your response. Yes, the knee "sleeve" does seem to help. It is the simple kind that you just slip on and after awhile you forget that you are wearing it. My neurologist suggested that it would help to stabilize the knee and it seems to help.

      1. Hi , I dont have experience with migranes, however, the "buckling knee" is something I deal with. I routently have moments where parts of my legs will simply give. They go weak and I lose a ton of strength very quickly, it often ends up with me falling.

    2. Thanks Devin,
yes the buckling is very violent and without giving you any notice that it's going to happen. (Thanks ms!)

The ocular migraines at least that's what my neurologist calls them, are just very bizarre light patterns...no pain, no nausea or anything like a regular migraine...just weird light shows.

      1. Hi . Many people with MS experience ocular migraines, but they are also common in people with no health conditions as we age. I do not have MS and I get them as well. For me, they have ranged from fascinatingly brilliant to annoying, but they have always been painless and have never lasted more than about 20 minutes. Both my primary care doctor and an ophthalmologist have assured me they are harmless. I hope that puts you at ease somewhat. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
