Does anyone have occasional violent room going round?

Each time I have been lying in bed, looking at the ceiling, when suddenly I have felt as if the room was swirling and the ceiling fan has shot across the room. Then everything back to normal except a bit wobbly. This is not like my usual swimmy, off balance feeling which sometimes comes with turning sideways. This is quite alarming. Jane

  1. Hi, (Jane)! What an uncomfortable thing to experience! Do you think it fits in the category of vertigo -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/symptoms/dizziness-vertigo? I have to say, that after being a moderator for this community for a few years, I have read about all kinds of vertigo/dizziness episodes and while yours is a bit unique, it fits with a lot of other member experiences. One of our community members share their experience with spinning episodes here -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/forums/vertigo. And another talks about their MS diagnosis, including spinning episodes, here -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/stories/living-with-ms-and-not-knowing. So, you are definitely not the only one dealing with this symptom.

That said, if you haven't done so already, please talk to your doctor about this, just to be safe.

I hope this helps and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have more questions about MS symptoms you are experiencing.

    2. I feel like I am experiencing something similar. It's been happening for nearly three years now. I'll be sitting or standing and suddenly it will feel like the floor jerks sideways under my feet. My whole body does the startle response to try to regain balance. I've absolutely face planted on the floor from the chair from overcorrecting. And the floor is definitely not moving, I checked 😁

Also when I'm tired now, things will appear to be moving in my peripheral vision. It will look like my glass of water is falling over or my pen is moving or whatever. And again the startle response kicks in, I've knocked over the things I was trying to save from falling that were a moment earlier perfectly fine.

I hope that it stops for you!

      1. Unfortunately that is part of ms, I’ve gotten to the point I can feel that sensation before it hits and can sit till it passes, took some pretty good falls before I figured it out

        1. Those early signs are like little signals that let you take precautions and avoid those tough falls, even though it probably took you some trial and error to get there. It’s definitely a reminder of how unpredictable MS can be, but finding ways to adapt can make a big difference. Thanks for sharing your experience—it’s encouraging to hear how you’re managing this challenge. -Latoya (Team Member)
