I was diagnosed in January 2014, and immediately lost so much functionality that I was unable to do any exercise nor sports. These were essential in my life, yet I had to cope without it. Drill forward several years and a friend offered to let me walk on her horse just so I would feel something good. (I used to be in equestrian for many years previously). After that one day on her horse, I knew I could ride again and the seed was planted! It took a long time to find somewhere to ride a horse, which ended up being in Bend, Oregon, USA. From this, I am morphed my riding into training Dressage. After that I then pushed into how to compete at a national and international level as a para Dressage rider. There’s so much more to this story, but suffice to say that it has given me an outlet of social activity where once I was completely isolated for days on end. It has also increased my ability to stand and walk as horses are incredibly rehabilitating. And they are so kind and gentle creatures.
I’m so interested to hear if there are other people who want to know more about this, or have stories of their own to share. Or even hobbies?? Maybe you’re looking for one, I found online Chess and I’m an addict now. It’s so difficult with the loss of functionality trying to find something that gives us joy.
