Recent Relapse

I recently was hospitalized for a relapse, I am 65yrs old and have had MS for 40 yrs . While in the hospital I received high doses of prednisone for 3 days IV. On the third day they could not wake me, my vitals were fine but I was out, I could not move. When I did come out of it the next day I think, I had hallucinations and angry outbursts. I was horrified by my behavior but could not help myself. I would go between yelling at my medical staff and out of control crying and apologizing. They released me and I did nothing but sleep for almost a week. I was crabby irritated by anyone who asked me a question. 2 Weeks after I began to feel better, the tingling was back to my lower leg no spasms, brain fog, fatigue was so much better. I am mobile and never have been in a wheelchair and only used a cane on occasions, my question is ,is this normal, are the risks worth it. I have been sleeping without my trazodone and have had fewer headaches. I really am still wondering how or why this happened.

  1. That must have been horribly frightening for you, . I am glad the treatment helped and that you are feeling better, but I can understand your fear of trying prednisone again. Hopefully, some community members will chime in with their experiences. Agitation and mood swings are common side effects of prednisone at low levels. It sounds like you experienced them in the extreme. The inability to waken you seems especially concerning. I hope you talk about your reaction with both your primary care doctor and your neurologist. Here is an article from our editorial team about prednisone and other corticosteroids: https://multiplesclerosis.net/treatment/corticosteroids. It might help you understand your reaction a bit better. Thinking of you! - Lori (Team Member)
