RX question

What medication filters through the kidneys and not the liver?

  1. , that's a good question! Have you brought it up with your physician? I would definitely take anything I state with a grain of salt, for your health and safety. That said, the majority of medications are processed through the liver. It may be a challenge to find medications that don't affect the liver in some way. Perhaps our community members are aware of some medications that bypass the liver. Best, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.

    1. This from a study abstract on PubMed: "Drugs such as morphine, paracetamol, and p-aminobenzoic acid are metabolized in the kidney." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3524205/

That is not a complete list. For more information, you can type your question into your search engine and read the links that pop up. Hope this helps. Kim, moderator

      1. , Regarding medications for multiple sclerosis, this would be a great question for your doctor. I conducted a very quick search and found a short list of medications that could be harmful to the kidneys: https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/drugs-your-kidneys . Besides things like pain medications, alcohol, antibiotics, and other therapies, I noticed that contrast agents (like gadolinium which is used for MRI scans to show active lesions) is on the list. This is one reason that the MRI facility might request recent laboratory/blood test results prior to MRIs to make sure that your kidney function is not impaired. Best wishes, Lisa, MS Team Member
