Surgery with m.s

So I have m.s I got diagnosed almost a year ago and now I have to have surgery on my neck this Friday a little scared and excited any advice...

  1. Hi . I am guessing this neck surgery is a good thing, that it will relieve you of some chronic pain. I have not been through surgery with MS, so I am hoping others will jump in here with some advice. I do know that surgery itself is a major stress on the body, so it is important to reduce stress everywhere else if you can. Make sure you have support in place for your recovery and that you are able to eat healthy as well. Have you ever tried meditation? If not, this might be a good time to start. Meditation can help ease the pre-surgery excitement (Even good stress can worsen symptoms.) and help you through the pre-op IVs, etc. It might even help you with pain after your surgery. Please keep us posted if you are able and you are comfortable doing so. I will be thinking of you and sending lots of healing vibes your way. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I made it through my surgery just find but the after effects took hold on me the filling alone got me bad ,but I'm doing great,thanks for taking the time to address my message

    2. Hi . I am sure it was a rough road, but I am glad you made it through. Was the neck surgery successful or are you still in pain? Wishing you the best! - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi Steph;
    Frequent flier to neuro OR. Recovery is long and arduous but very manageable, expect some mild discomfort and stiffness (take pills, pills, and more pills), everyday you will feel better. Not too much pain (again, take pills) just take it easy and do what doc recommends for your post-op activities. Go easy on the pre-op diet, implement a bowel care program because your gut will get more sleep than you so help it along with gentle wakefulness. Last November was my 8th spine surgery. Been there done that. Don't worry you will do well.

    1. , I know all the members here will be sending you good healing energy & support 😊. Lori and Jerkyjerk have offered wise advice. Yes, be sure to remember to be kind to YOU and try to practice self care before and after and DO take those meds as per Dr's orders! There's no martyr prize for best pain sufferer 😉. Let your body ivest precious energy in healing vs pain response. Fingers crossed you get clear, thorough info from your surgeon and medical team re aftercare. I recently had an emergency surgery and left the hospital feeling seriously shorted in that regard. Luckily I later got helpful foll-up care from another source (my Nurse Practitioner). Steph, if possible, are you able to have someone be there with you before surgery and prior to discharge? Stressful situations and "surfacing" from anaesthetic aren't conductive to the best mental state for being your own advocate 🤯. Another set of caring ears at the hospital really helps! A print-up of aftercare from the med team could be invaluable too. Surgery best wishes, Steph 🙂

      1. I've had multiple spinal surgeries due to injury in the last 10 years, including cervical fusion. No advice to give other than relax and do what the docs tell you to do post-op. I felt relief from my pain as soon as I woke up. Use the meds as you need them, and be prepared to take it slow for a little while until you start PT.
