Walking

I use to walk the track at the schools. The fresh air and the sun always helped me so much.
I found it cleared my head along with the pain & I slept much better. I realize not everyone can do this but if you can try it. At first I was lucky to make one lap then I would do a bit more. It amazed me how it helped my mind & sleep plus pain. I would dress according to the weather. I loved it!

  1. I love that you were able to use walking as a form of exercise and also a great way to improve your mental health, ! I, too, am a big fan of walking. It's a form of exercise that most people can do; it's inexpensive, easy to do in most places, and it's relatively easy on the body.

Are you still able to walk sometimes?

    1. Hi Erin, You always have pleasant and upbeat replies to people, that's not always easy for a brutally honest person like myself. Something many people have not liked about me since I was a kid. Taught by a very strict father to be honest, NEVER lie, it has stuck with me for decades. Anyways, regarding walking. I love to walk, always have and living with dogs all of my life so far, it's wonderful exercise for both me and my furry loves. But....and there's always a "but"....a woman walking alone isn't always safe and women who think they are always safe are either incredibly naive or just plain stupid. I was a victim of a somewhat violent attempted kidnap many years ago when I was walking home from a friend's house. It still gives me a terrible "fight or flight" response feeling after many, many years now. I was told I have PTSD from the incident. I am not carefree when I walk, my head is constantly on a swivel. Women are unfortunately very vulnerable creatures in this world unless you take self-defense courses or carry a weapon.

    2. , I am pretty pleasant here, but believe me, I can be a real pain in the rear. I, too, have experienced certain things in life and I am a cautious walker. I NEVER wear headphones or ear buds on a walk. Generally, I either let people know when/where I am walking or I will take my phone, just in case.

It sucks that I had to teach my daughter this, too. I still love to walk and fortunately, I have teenage sons that will walk with me.

But, I hear you. We women always have to think about more than others may realize. I see that difference with my sons and my daughter. And, honestly, it makes me a little sad.

I am so sorry your sense of safety was taken away from you. That's so unfair (if, unfortunately, all too common in this world).

  2. Hi Erin thank you for your response I appreciate it more than you know.
You’re right it’s inexpensive, and something you don’t have to deal with a lot of thought process. I have had a hard time in the past couple years getting up and going. My husband Retired, and for some reason I stopped doing everything. It is something I intend to do this year for sure. I’m trying now to find someone I can talk to about some issues. I’m having a hard time with.
About yourself, are you able to exercise at all? It’s amazing how it can clear your head and ease your mind. I remember in the summer after my walk I would sit up on the bleachers and just look at the sky not realizing how lucky I was to be able to do it. I do hope to get back to it as soon as possible. Again, thank you very much for your response. It means a lot to me.
All my best to you, hope you are well, Susan 😊

    1. (Susan), my husband and I are a number of years out from retiring, but I can see how that would be a pretty seismic shift for a relationship. Even if it's a good change, it's still a big change to adjust to!

Fortunately, I have a teenager at home that loves to walk and doesn't let me make any excuses 😉 . It's nice to have a built in accountability check like that!

I hope you are able to get walking again.
