Is it possible for lesions to disappear?

I had an MRI showing 5 lesions on the brain in 2001. My recent MRI showed the same 5, but more appeared and 3 on the spinal cord. I'm quite aware mine most likely won't go, as they have been there a decade and more appeared, but curious if it's possible for them to ever disappear? Or is it scar tissue so will always be there, whether or not causing current symptoms?

  1. Hi Gemma Kennedy! It is possible for lesions to disappear, but even if they do, that doesn't necessarily mean that you will experience a lessening of MS symptoms. While not everyone experiences diminishing lesions, some of our members have and perhaps they will share their experiences here. Here is a thread that includes some discussion of disappearing lesions, mostly related to CIS (Clinically Isolated Syndrome). I hope this answers you question and thanks for reaching out!

    1. From what I gathered, they never 'go away',, they may become inactive and kind of like a dead zone scar. You can rewire your brain, through TIME and new ways to do things.. stay positive!
