"Crappy Subject"

I've existed with MS for more than 41 years now. Used to be an athletic person, physically strong, not much bothered me. MS struck.
I always had what my mother and friends called, an iron stomach, could eat anything, never have a problem. My mother used to say I could probably digest rocks. And then, MS struck. Started having gut problems. Not too bad at first but as years went by, it's gotten worse. Several years ago my Gastro doc diagnosed me IBS. Bouts of nausea and diarrhea. I don't eat red meat but even if I have a pork chop or sausage or chicken, a short time later, diarrhea and horrible cramps. I've recently spoken to 3 people who have MS and they say they started experiencing the same thing a couple of years ago. I've read so many articles now that link MS and gut problems. I'm convinced that many of my problems are MS related.
Does anyone else experience this when eating protein?

  1. , I know some members have struggled with digesting certain foods, especially post MS-diagnosis. This can be due to the MS itself or due to the medications to treat MS and MS symptoms. Bowel issues are not uncommon with MS and they can very from incontinence issues to gastroparesis and more, so you're definitely not alone in this.

BUT, it's not uncommon to be diagnosed with another health condition, in addition to MS. So, IBS may very well be the condition causing your issues. It may be a little challenging to pinpoint the cause, but visiting your gastro (or a new gastro) may help get some answers.

Are you able to eat other forms of protein (eggs, cheese, peanut butter, etc) without experiencing bowel problems?

We do have a sister site dedicated to IBS, which you're welcome to check out -- https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/.

And, I hope you get feedback from other MS community members that experience or have experienced bowel issues like you described.
