Does anyone else have problems with severe abdominal pain with their MS?

Had severe abdominal pain back in the spring. Had tons of tests done - discovered a small hernia but that was not cause of my pain. They found no reflux, so think possibly MS related? It went away after 3 months and is now back again. Anyone else have this problem?

  1. Hi, ! First, I am sorry you are experiencing this pain. Second, are you experiencing any other symptoms along with the abdominal pain; like bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea or constipation? I only ask because MS can cause digestive issues and I wanted to see if that was what you were dealing with.

Also, there is an MS symptom referred to as "The MS Hug", which is described as a tight or crushing feeling around the chest and/or abdomen. You can read about it here, if you're unfamiliar with it -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/symptoms/ms-hug. Do the symptoms sounds like what you are experiencing?

Also, if the "Hug" sounds like it might be what you are dealing with, here's an article (with tons of community member comments following the article) on the topic -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/everybody-love-a-hug-but-not-ms-hugs-what-are-they. I hope this information is helpful for you and feel free to let me know if this isn't quite what you're dealing with.

Also, we always suggest letting your doctor know about any new or worsening symptoms you experience and since this one has come back, you may want to let your doctor know, if you haven't done so already.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with abdominal pain. That's incredibly uncomfortable. I see that Erin has already asked a lot of great questions and shared a great article with you.

I struggled with digestive issues around the time of my diagnosis. I ended up having SIBO Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. It's not MS related but it was something that took a while to get properly diagnosed.

Please know that I don't have a medical background, and I obviously don't know anything about your health, I'm really just a fellow MS thriver sharing a personal perspective. And often the problem is abdominal pain can be caused from so many things, so it's hard even for the doctors to pinpoint. I hope that you find the information shared here to be helpful and that it helps to lead to answers for you.

I'm glad you're part of this community.
