Leaving out words in sentences

Greetings all : )
New here and was diagnosed about a year ago. Been an interesting change of life.

Something i have noticed this past week.. I am trying to figure out if its MS or just me not being young anymore. Im 40.

I WFH and chat with co-workers all day and iv realized some oddities. I am thinking what i want to say in my head and then later i re-read what i typed and find that i leave words out.

For instance lets say i am typing "Hey man, just letting you know you will need to log into that server".

I will re-read it and it will say "Hey man, just you know you will need to log into that server".

I get it if i have typos and need to correct it.. thats understandable when your fingers feel like you have rubber bands binding them to the keyboard, but missing entire words and not even realizing it?

Curious if anybody else has seen cognitive issues like this.

Thanks!

  1. , I am sorry you are dealing with this, but I have to say I also find this kind of fascinating. I will say that cognitive issues with MS can really run the gamut and even professionals struggle to fully explain why some cognitive issue may occur or change. We all know it can be due to lesions and damage, but how those issues present can vary so widely.

I have definitely heard of people with MS stumbling over words or spacing out words while speaking and such, so it's not that big of a leap for this to occur when corresponding via writing/text. This is a piece from one of our contributors about cognitive issues, although what the writer (Devin) experiences is not exactly what you described -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/more-cognitive-challenges.

And, as someone who has reached a certain age (46 😉 ), I can attest to some weird word forgetfulness, so either theory you posed is pretty plausible.

Anyway, I hope you get some helpful feedback from other community members that may experience similar issues.

Thanks for taking the time to post!

    1. Hi , sorry to hear about what you've been going through! Cognitive issues can be scary. Particularly if you work in a technical job (as I did and seems like you do). I do think working in a technical type job makes it easier to spot cognitive issues though. Figuring out if it's MS or aging is difficult. Everyone starts to slip at some point as they get older. That said, I'd ask myself, are these issues consistent? Are there possibly similar type mistakes that I've missed (I know there were times when I'd go back and look at some code I'd written, even if it worked, it looked nothing like what I would produce)? I'd say if the mistakes seem consistent or seem especially prevalent when you are stressed or too warm or any of the ways that might cause MS symptoms to be a little worse, then you might want to discuss this with your doctor. I'd also say, what does your gut tell you? Does it feel like not these aren't just simple mistakes but rather, something more? Sometimes you just "know" when something isn't right.

No matter what you end up thinking, you should tell your neurologist. You may want to even insist on some cognitive testing (even if things are fine, that can help establish a baseline for the future). Getting it on record and in your chart can be valuable for the future, even if this is just a little aging.

Best of luck and try not to worry too much (always easier said than done), there are ways to help improve cognitive issues and to even work around them.
