Very Little Done About Animal Cruelty

When I read articles like these, people comment how important their pets are too them, how loving they are, how important they are to them, I wonder if any of these people realize that there is horrific cruelty to animals going on every single day and very little is done about it.
I have lived with dogs every day of my life so far and I am now 78 yrs. old. I've saved, rescued, adopted and at this point, ashamed to say, I purchased two pups from a breeder back in the early 80's. Happily gave them $1200. for two beautiful Doberman pups. They forced their female dog to breed for profit, putting her and her pups in danger.
I love dogs beyond words. They have been my constant companions since the day I was born. My dogs have saved my life more than once over the years by putting themselves in the face of danger to protect me without being told to do so.
Dogs are highly intelligent, intuitive, compassionate, funny and, they give us unconditional love, something human beings are not capable of. Dogs deserve to be respected, given proper food, care, love and protection.
There is rarely a day goes by when I don't read about a poor innocent dog being found in a plastic bag, in a trash barrel, a dog dumped on the side of the road, a dog beaten, starved and left to die. Horrible. Terrible. Cruel. Insane. But it does happen and for the most part, a great many ignore it. Too many. And it keeps happening.
Time is taken to write about our pain and suffering on this website. To comment about what someone else has said. We apparently have the time in our lives to do that. So I ask, if we can do that, why can't people take the time, a half hour or so once or twice a week, to write, call, email, ask, plead, demand, of the mayors of our towns, cities, our state representatives and if need be, our President, to ask that more laws be put into place, harsher punishments for those who are cruel/inhumane to innocent animals who cannot protect themselves, who cannot speak for themselves. We ARE their only voices.
I have done this for many years. I continue to report anything that isn't right regarding abuse, neglect of a dog to my local animal shelter, the MSPCA and if need be, those in other towns that I've visited.
When I've asked people who I know, absolutely had to know, what was going on in the house next to them, across the street, down the street, the answers were all pretty much the same, "we thought someone else would call", or "we don't want to get involved". And not getting involved means, an innocent dog is left to suffer.
I asked my newest next-door neighbor, "if it was a child suffering, would you ignore it?" His answer to that, "I make it a point to mind my own business."
This is the world we live in.
It's up to people who care to speak up, to attempt to make changes.
Silence is for cowards.
