What's your opinion on my symptoms and how to proceed?

Over the course of 4 days in August I went numb/tingly almost hollow feeling from rib cage down. After being hospitalized, with several tests I was diagnosed with transvers myelitis with demyelination, lesion on my thoracic spine, and have greater than five oligoclonal bands. The MS specialist I saw today said because I don't have brain lesions I don't have MS and treatment isn't necessary. Monitor with brain scans every six months and wait as I most likely will not have a second exacerbation. I'm just concerned about waiting and risking further nerve damage.

  1. Hi daisysmiles,
Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear what you've been through! There is a specific criteria for the diagnosis of MS including that the evidence of damage has to be present in 2 or more areas of the brain and/or spinal cord, evidence that the damage happened one or more months apart, and that the damage did not happen because of another disease (https://multiplesclerosis.net/diagnosis/). If you are concerned, however, it is never wrong to seek a second opinion! I hope this is helpful! Please keep us updated with how you're doing if you'd like!
    Warmly,
    Christina, MultipleSclerosis.net Team
