Boom and bust cycles?

Generally, I've tried to do more on days when I have more energy and less on days when I feel sick.
But I read somewhere that people with CFS do that and it can worsen their symptoms and that it's better to evenly spread out activity.
Which one should I do? I just find it hard to imagine getting much of anything done on days when I am sick.
