flu and MS

I am providing assistance for my sister who has MS. This week she has developed cold/flu symptoms. She has no fever, vitals are all good and she is negative for COVID. This morning she is vomiting, but I believe she downed a bit of whiskey and NyQuil yesterday and this seems more hangover than flu. But I'm unsure and need guidance. When do I say, let's go to the hospital?

  1. , first, I am sorry your sister is not feeling well. Second, I can't provide medical advice, for your safety. I would definitely try to get in touch with her physician to see what he/she recommends. In my area, the hospitals are stressed and at capacity, so we've been told to avoid the ER unless necessary. Your sister's physician may be able to give you some guidance and things to watch for.

Good luck and I hope she starts feeling better quickly and that you stay healthy, too!

    1. Hi . Please keep us posted if you feel comfortable doing so. If she is still home with you and still vomiting, it is important to keep her hydrated. A few sips of broth or water fortified with electrolytes would be best, but any non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated liquid is better than nothing. Does she often take Nyquil and whiskey together? Some people will do that to knock themselves out when they know they will have trouble sleeping, but it can be really dangerous. If she does have trouble sleeping, which is common for people with MS, her neurologist might be able to prescribe medications that will help. I hope you have been in touch with a doctor by now and that you have reached a decision that you can feel confident in. Taking care of someone with MS is hard work.
