Pain and weakness in one leg

I have an aching pain in the knee and hip of my left leg that is worse at night when I'm in bed. I don't see any swelling, redness and it doesn't hurt when I press the aching areas. This has been more or less ongoing for years, sometimes it's worse than other times, but I can't point to a reason. Just recently I've lost strength in the same leg. I can't walk up steps unless I lead with my right leg. I'm concerned about seeing an orthopedic specialist because they may recommend replacement surgery. I read that my symptoms may be caused by MS. Has anyone else had these symptoms? What treatment helped?

  1. Hi , I've not experienced the same thing you are so can't speak to that specific type of pain and sudden weakness. MS can definitely cause the weakness. There was a time that I had intense achiness in my arms (down to the bones) and it turns out that I was extremely vitamin D deficient. Fixing that helped to reduce the achiness. If you've had a lot of steroids, that can lead to bone necrosis that can cause its own problems. Don't be fearful to talk with your neurologist and consult with an orthopedic to find out what's going on. If something can be done to improve your mobility and quality of life, then it might be worth it. Best wishes, Lisa

    1. Thanks, Lisa! I think I'm experiencing doctor fatigue and am fearful of having something new. That said you're right and I need to make an app. k

      1. , Good luck when you do have that appointment. Let us know how it goes.

    2. Good luck! I hope you can get some relief.

      1. I've read a lot and it seems these are common MS symptoms, but I am seeing an orthopedic knee and hip specialist on the 13th. My guess (and hope) is that he'll prescribe PT. I'll let you know!

        1. , I am so glad you made an appointment! This could be something MS-related, but it sounds like biomechanical issues are at least as likely to be the reason for your pain. One small misalignment in the hip or knee, even the tiniest one, can throw all of those joints off and cause pain that worsens over time. I hope you get answers from the orthopedic and that you get relief Please keep us posted if you feel comfortable doing so. Best wishes! - Lori (Team Member)
