I continued to work for 10 yrs after my diagnosis of RRMS. But, after a relapse affecting my thoracic spinal cord, I sadly could no longer work. I have Chronic spasms of my intercostal muscles which causes a (band-like) tightness that progresses to intense squeezing around my torso - "MS Hug." I always felt misnamed - does not feel like a hug - feels more like a boa constrictor or very tight corset.
I have significant atrophy at T5/6 which is the cause. I have heard many MS patients talk about having MS Hug (but that it comes & goes). What is rarer or weider about my symptom is that it is chronic (constant) which is very difficult to treat. I take Baclofen & Lyrica and wear a cooling vest all day/everyday around my torso. I have found no treatment that entirely alleviates the pain and discomfort. But, the torso cooling vest has been a Godsend, it helps the most in relieving some of the band-like sensations of pain & intense squeezing around my torso.
