Sciatica and MS

Has anyone ever had sciatica and had to explain to your family that even though it is similar to MS in some ways, it is much worse? For me, with sciatica, the pain from my lower back all the way to the ends of my toes has been, at times, worse than kidney stones & childbirth combined! My doctor called in 2 prescriptions for pain, but neither one helped. I know Advil isn't good for us to take several times a day, but that's been the only thing that helps.
I'm much better now. I only have twinges that last a few seconds instead of several minutes. But, the twinge that I just had made me think about how difficult it was to get around last week. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for dealing with sciatica and MS. I guess I'm worried that I'll get it again because all that I do is transfer in & out of bed and on & off the toilet so I'm thinking that I turned or twisted somehow and pulled a muscle in my butt. Which, if not for the big knott I wouldn't have even noticed because the sciatica pain was so bad, lol.
I'm just scared it'll happen again.

Thanks,
Michelle

  1. Hi Michelle, I'm sorry to hear that you've experienced such terrible pain from sciatica. It can be incredibly painful and for those who have never experienced, it can be hard to understand fully. I'm so glad that you reached out about this because we actually have had quite a few discussions about it. Here's a link to one discussion https://multiplesclerosis.net/clinical/sciatica and here's one about a fellow member's experience with physical therapy. https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/physical-therapy-treat-spasticity I don't know if that's an option for you but perhaps you could at least google "PT exercises for sciatica" and see if that brings anything up for you that is helpful. Wishing you some sustainable relief!

    1. Thank you so much, !
My insurance just approved physical therapy for me. But, it's going to be 2 weeks til I can see a therapist, my symptoms will be gone by then (🙏) but I can use the opportunity to learn some things that will help me next time, and probably help me right now.

      1. , I'm glad the PT got approved and yes, hopefully you learn some things, even if your symptoms will have dissipated by then.

      2. that's great that PT was approved, we'll definitely celebrate that win because insurance wins don't always come easy. I like your mindset too that even if the symptoms are gone by then, you can still learn some techniques that can hopefully help to keep the symptoms at bay.
