Copaxone reaction days after injection

I recently had a strange extreme intermittent burning reaction at an injection site on the back of my hip, which didn’t occur until days after the injection. The skin at the injection site looked and felt normal. Now, a few weeks later, the same thing just happened on my lower thigh injection, 2 days after injection.

I use the autoject and think I may have had the depth set too deep, since now the thigh has an sudden extreme burning sensation when the quad muscle is activated (ie: walking). I called a nurse to ask about this and they have not heard of a reaction occurring days after the injection.

Has anyone else experienced this? It is excruciating! I happen to be pregnant as well, but I doubt that has anything to do with this strange delayed reaction.

Thanks in advance for any input or guidance!

  1. Hi . I am sure that is a bit scary, especially since you are pregnant (Congratulations!). Injection site reactions are not uncommon with Copaxone, but it's odd that it happens two days later. Here is a link to a pdf about injection site reactions from the manufacturer: https://www.copaxone.com/globalassets/copaxone/injection-site-reactions.pdf I found this in the pdf as well "Talk to an MS-certified nurse by phone at 1-800-887-8100 if you have questions or concerns." It might help to give them a call and describe your reaction. I hope you get some answers and that you can continue taking it safely and with confidence. Wishing you the best! - Lori (Team Member)

    1. thank you so much for your response. That’s actually who I called earlier and spoke with the shared solutions nurse, then they had Teva call me later on for more detail. Unfortunately, no one has heard of this type of delayed reaction before. My typical injection site reactions present immediately following injection and they subside in a few hours.. no issue with those! Thanks again for your congratulations and well wishes.. I certainly hope it’s not a recurring thing, as this is the only medication I could take while pregnant and nursing. All the best!

    2. I hope you get it figured out and that your pregnancy is healthy and uneventful, . Let us know when the baby is born if you feel up to sharing. 😀 - Lori (Team Member)
