My journey with MS

I was 43 when I got my diagnosis. I was in the middle of a divorce and would soon be a single mom. I was terrified! My grandma who had MS spent many years bedridden and in a wheelchair and I feared the worst. But that was over 70 years ago! My neurologist assured me that research and treatment had really improved over the years and he said that I could lead a normal life! Music to my ears! That's been my goal ever since and I'm 68 years young! I am no longer in an interferon as the research showed if I did not have any additional lesions in my brain after I turned 60, 8 didn't have to use medication. I am taking yoga twice a week, plan to start with Tai Chi soon twice a week. My husband and I just did a cruise through Europe. I averaged 9 to 14,000 steps each day as all we did was walk through the towns we went to. The weather had record heat at between the 90's and 100 degrees! Hot weather is my cryptonite!! Every day after our tours, I went to the ship, took a shower, followed by a nap. My husband joined in with activities on the ship and I just let that go. I've learned to listen to my body and it was exhausted each and every day. But I prescribed self-care for me and took care of business. I'm grateful that I'm still alive at 68, as my parents both died in their 60's.

  1. Your story is so inspiring, ! I am so glad your MS experience has been nothing like your grandmother's. I think we know so much more about both MS and just aging healthily than we did 70 years ago. I do wish your grandma did not have to suffer so much with her MS.

I love that your life has changed so much since that low point of being diagnosed while going through a divorce and facing single parenthood. It just shows that we can endure so much and even find ways to survive AND thrive. I am impressed your weathered (no pun intended) the European heatwave fairly well and way to go on those crazy high daily step numbers! Wowza! I hope yoou both had a great time overall and experienced all the things you wanted to on the cruise and visiting ports.

Thanks for sharing your MS experience and I hope you continue to stay as healthy and active as you want to.

    Best, Erin, Team Member.
