Telling your employee that you have MS

1st of all it was early 80’s when I found out I had it, telling my employee about a disease no one knew much about was going to be difficult. I wanted to show them my worth, that is what not going to affect my job and prove myself, so I didn’t say anything for about maybe two years. I had a perfect attendance record, my work was always on time and I was a good employee, not patting myself on the back but I was. Then the 1st medicine came out and my doctor wanted me on it.
It was going to be a lottery draw for the patients that were eligible, my number cam up in the 1st drawing.
So now I had a decision to make because I need to tell our HR manager because I was going to have to fight the insurance company to get it covered. I went and talk to her and she was 1) surprise I was sick 2) and happy I was going to be able to get on medication.
Next the dreaded call to the insurance company, win, win, the lady I spoke too had MS, was aware of Betaseron being on the market now and told me she would help me jump thru all the hoops!
Hallelujah I got the meds still cost a pretty penny but at now 70 years old and in relatively good health I know that God had His hand all over this path I was on.
Now you have a lot going for you in this day and time, a company must accommodate your needs. A handicap spot to park, handrails if needed. Smaller companies may fight it but the laws are on your side, don’t let yourself be kicked to the curb, fight for what’s right. That can’t fire you but they may try to make your life miserable seek out an advocate to help you.
This did not happen to me but I have know some people it has, we didn’t ask for this disease, no more than people ask for cancer, so we should not be penalized for something we had no control over! Good luck!
