2026 MS Awareness Month: Invisible But Not Imaginary

If you were to look at a photo of someone with multiple sclerosis (MS), what would you see? You might see a person smiling at a park, sitting at a desk, or playing with their kids. Often, what you don’t see is the most difficult part of their day.

This March, MultipleSclerosis.net is proud to kick off MS Awareness Month 2026. Our theme this year is "Invisible But Not Imaginary." We are dedicated to shining a light on the symptoms that don't show up on the outside but affect everything on the inside.

What Does "Invisible" Really Feel Like?

For many in our community, MS is like a ghost. You can’t see the "cog fog" that makes it hard to remember a simple word. You can’t see the "MS Hug" that feels like a tight band squeezing your ribs. And you certainly can’t see the overwhelming fatigue that feels like walking through waist-deep mud.
Because these symptoms are hidden, friends, family, and even doctors sometimes misunderstand them. You might hear, "But you look so good!" while you are actually struggling to stand up. These experiences aren't just in your head. They are a real, physical part of living with MS. This month, we want to validate those feelings. If you feel it, it is real.

What to Expect This Month

We have a busy month planned to help our community feel seen and heard. Here is a look at what’s coming up:

  1. Deep Dives into Unseen Symptoms

Every week, we will publish new articles written by patients and advocates. We will explore the "hidden" side of MS, including but not limited to:

Sensory Issues: That strange tingling, numbness, or "pins and needles."
Cognitive Challenges: Managing brain fog at work and home.
Emotional Health: The link between MS and mood changes, such as anxiety or depression.
  2. The "In America" Interactive Quiz

This year, we are doing something special. We’ve combined our interactive symptom quiz with the powerful data from our 2025 In America survey.

As you take the quiz to share your own experiences, you will see real-time insights from thousands of other patients who answered our survey last year. For example, if you select "fatigue" as your toughest symptom, the quiz will show you how many other members of our community feel the exact same way. It’s a way to see the "big picture" of MS while realizing that your personal journey is backed by a community of thousands.

  3. A Special Awareness Month Giveaway

To make the month even more exciting, we are hosting a giveaway to address the "invisible" struggle of temperature regulation that many living with MS face. To help combat night sweats and overheating, our friends at BedFan have generously donated a bFan Bedfan Under Sheet Cooling Fan as the giveaway prize. This innovative cooling system is designed to help one lucky winner manage their body temperature and finally achieve a more comfortable, restful night’s sleep. More to come on how to enter...

    Join the Conversation

This month is about more than just facts; it’s about connection. When we talk about the symptoms people can’t see, we take away their power to make us feel isolated.
We invite you to follow along, comment on our articles, and share your own experiences in our Invisible But Not Imaginary forum. Let’s make the invisible visible, together.
