A Person Has to Accept What They Cannot Change

A person has to accept what they cannot change.

In order to move on, to learn how to breathe again, to climb above that obstacle that never ceases to expand, we must accept what we cannot change. Otherwise, the vines will gather around your ankles. Twisting and turning, wrapping ever so tightly. Holding you in place now and forevermore.

As monumental as the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is. A moment in time, when your heart skips a beat. The life you once knew mere seconds before, has shattered. Crumbled to the ground. Never to be seen again.

To get past it, to be the person you once knew, you must accept the unacceptable. Dwelling in its shadow, lurking in the deep, it will hamper your being to the point of no return. In order to reclaim oneself, to be the person you were born to be, you must accept your fate and to give it a place.

We didn't want this, we were robbed. Our life taken from us, gone in a blink of an eye. But you see, it was all an illusion, a trick of mirrors. Up a magician's sleeve. Once you face your fears, to boldly stand up and confront the beast, to look at it in its eyes. Then, you can move on.

It is not fair, I know this. But such is life. The days of yonder are gone. Be that as it may, we still can dream, we still can aspire. To flourish, to grow. The mental trappings that form steel bars around us, can be unlocked. It's up to you to do so. Multiple sclerosis is the tiger that snarls, pounces and devours, but we can side step around him.

Remember who you are, who you once were. You are beautiful, you are caring. Kind and loving. You laughed, you smiled. You gave and never asked in return. You sought adventure, you craved delight. To walk in the sunshine and to lay in the fields of gold. That person still exists.

Give it a place, yes we are sick, we will always be sick, but we can still live our life. Move past it, accept it. Deep down, in your heart and your soul, accept it. Once you do, once you nod your head and say to yourself, “Ok... this is my life now.” Then it will be unlocked. Those bars lowered and you once again can walk the trail that your life lays in front of you.

A person has to accept what they cannot change. A person needs to carry that burden that rests on their shoulders. Heavy as it might be, we can still walk with pride. The person you are is mighty, strength unending. Walk tall, walk fierce. Be the person you were meant to be. Fulfill your destiny.

Accept the unacceptable and move on.
