Assistive devices

Hello Community! My name is Toni and I am reaching out on behalf of my mother Evelyn. She was diagnosed in 1991 and is now 83 years old. Last year, after an untreated urinary tract infection left her with a mild case of sepsis, she is no longer able to stand. Wondering if any members might have a multi-lift device that would allow her to transfer from her wheelchair to the car seat?

  1. I'm so sorry for your mother. I don't have a device, but if your mother has insurance, she may be eligible for a device through the insurance. She'd need a physician order written and submitted by a primary care or her specialist. Likely would also require an evaluation from an occupational therapist in home (also from a physician order) to determine the appropriate level of need. It's not a quick process, but is effective. If you can't find what you need elsewhere. Generally, the cost would be completely covered by insurance, but not always.

I'm wishing my best for you your Mom 💜

    1. if you can get the order for an in home occupational therapist evaluation, you can go through the whole house and look at anything your mother has difficulty with. From shower chairs to grabbers, lifts, updates or upgrades for wheelchairs, and everything in between. Make use of the time with the OT for the evaluation. The order can (and should) include follow up visits for training on the proper use of any equipment received.

Again, wishing you and your Mom all the best and hope that this route brings good things. 💜

    2. Hi csmith, I am going to use everything you have shared and pray for the best! She lives at Oakmont of East Sacramento and has a care team that helps her get up and moving with the assistance of a hoyer lift, so I am sure that she have everything she needs inside. It would be extremely helpful and life changing to being able to have this device.
      Thanks again!
      Toni

    1. Hi Erin, I just responded to csmith, and do plan to take her advice. I am able to send messages to my mom's care team directly and will do so.
      Thanks again!
