Mercury fillings caused my MS

I had 2 Mercury fillings from when I was younger, that never seemed to really bother me. Or, so I thought!
I started having serious problems with my stomach and bowels, cramping in my joints, bouts of horrible headaches, and muscle spasms. The headaches were debilitating. Months before my diagnosis, I was carried into my doctor’s office for shots, every week for migraines. During this time, my body had been rejecting those fillings and one day, one just exploded in my mouth. About a week later, the other did the same thing. Not very long after that, I was at work and couldn’t seem to think, or do my job. I was getting very dizzy and unable to concentrate on anything in particular. My best friend took me to the small hospital in our small town. They did a physical and recommended a neurology specialist, suggesting that I had MS.
I researched my family history and no one in my family on either side had ever had MS. I spent an entire day at the neurology clinic, doing lab tests, MRIs, scans, and a myriad of other tests. At the end of the day, I was told, that may have 5 lesions in my brain, resulting in a diagnosis of relapsing/remitting Multiple Sclerosis. I was given a copy of the MRI’s. My Neurologist put me on shots, once a week, that made me feel like I had double pneumonia for 2-3 days at time. I took these shots for 22 years and my primary care doctor had me on so much medicine, that I became almost bedridden. Something had to change. I quit seeing my primary care doctor, Covid hit, and it was getting hard to see a new doctor. So, I quit taking all my medications, including the shots, for about 3 years, even though, I was still having exacerbations. Fortunately, I started seeing all new doctors and my last MRI scan showed only 10 very small lesions and my diagnosis was lowered to mild relapsing/remitting MS. I still have some debilitating exacerbations, but not even half, as many as before. And I’m now on an infusion every six months, that do not affect me the way the shots did. I didn’t know at the time, that there was mercury in my fillings. If I had, I would have had them removed, or not allowed them in the first place. Mercury doesn’t belong in the human body! And I am beside myself, to understand why it was ever, an acceptable choice for fillings.

  1. Hi I really wish this didn't happen to you. This must be so devastating for you and to not be fully informed about the dental procedure, is awful. Unfortunately this is not the first time I am hearing about someone get so sick from mercury fillings. A very good friend of mine went through the same thing, and to this day, he does not have a diagnosis but a myriad of medications that he needs to take daily. I am glad to hear you are doing better than you were before and having less exacerbations. Please keep us posted with how you are doing. Jill (Team Member)
