Problems with memory

Hi, I'm new to the site since I kind of suspect I may have MS and I wanted to see if someone could help me.

I have had some weird symptoms since probably like 5 or 6 years from now. Back then I was just 12 years old. I began by feeling like I had brain fog and timed began to passed really quick (I will talked more deeply about it later but till this day I still suffer from this). Then, some years later, a strong body weakness appeared as well as a weird limb tremors (this just bothered me a bit as just began to shake at some point of returning my movements). I went and see a lot of doctors, did a lot of test and came out fine, but never got to a neurologist as the weakness disappeared for a couple of years (but the tremors kept on going). Now, talking about the present time, some months ago I had a recent anomaly, if I can call it like that. One random day my arms and legs were really weakened for no apparent reason, I had muscle spasms and from time to time I had weird sensations on my legs, as if somebody was throwing me cold water, when in reality I was dry seated on a chair. It got a bit worst but disappeared some days later. I thought I just imagined it and didn't gave it more importance, but I once again suffered from this and disappeared in some days. And in this couple of months my memory has been getting worst. I can easily remember important events and I don't have any trouble with learning and understanding, but what I am really getting worried is with the time. Time passes incredibly fast to me, and lately it is impossible to remember when I did something, I know where and with who, but mostly not when.

Things to keep in mind: I have a history of suffering form extreme anxiety (that could possibly be what causes my symptoms). I mostly didn't tell anyone because I thought it was just all part of my mind, but now reading on the internet I suspect I might have MS. I am worried that it is too late and I will develope and important deterioration with my memory. I might not seem liked it but I'm extremely scared (keep in mind that I'm 18 years old).

If someone has a similar experience and might know if what I am developing is MS it would be amazing. Thanks for your time.

  1. Hi Juan Ma, first of all, I'm sorry to hear what you've been through. I was diagnosed with MS when I was somewhat young, not 18, but while still in college. It can be pretty scary (and whew, talk about anxiety, I hear you!). Next, I want to say, that if it is MS, try not to worry about too much damage being done already or anything like that. You are still young enough that if it is MS, they have medications that can really help you out. Medications that didn't even exist back when I was diagnosed. Seriously, they've made tremendous progress over the years.

Now, your symptoms do sound a lot like MS. Weakness, tremors, memory (https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/handling-memory-loss), and even that weird wet sensation (https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/some-of-the-weirder-ms-symptoms). Now, all of those symptoms could be something else too, but as someone with MS and who writes about MS, I can tell you that yea, you are at least on a very plausible track (which again, if it's MS, that's good, because of the treatments available now). I think you should really try to schedule an appointment with a neurologist, preferably one that specializes in MS. Explain your symptoms to them and share your thoughts. They will likely order an MRI of your brain and spine and that will be helpful in helping to possibly make a diagnosis. Remember, if the doctor dismisses you, move on to another one. It's so important to advocate for yourself these days.

So the next step is to look for a neurologist (this link may be helpful, select 'healthcare providers' and 'neurologic care': https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Resources-Support/Find-Doctors-Resources but however you normally look for a doctor will work too. Most insurance companies have a list as well). The important thing to remember is to try not to worry (I know that's impossible). You are doing the right thing and looking for an answer, so many people, especially at a young age, easily dismiss many symptoms. So you are way ahead of the game, keep that in mind. Best of luck and remember we are here for you. Seriously, if you need to talk, let me know, I've been there! You're doing everything right though and you are going to be ok!

    1. thank you so much for taking the time to read me and to reply so quickly. My mum and I are searching for an specialist, probably it won't be an MS specialist but at least a good neurologist yes. I will do whatever it's in my hands to follow your advice and I will stay positive. Once I have more information I will keep you guys updated if you want me to.

Thank you so much again and I sincerely wish you the best.

Thanks again and I wish you my best!

  3. I understand 100%! Having anxiety because my mind isn't cooperating, forgetting something I never thought I would. Frustration with myself when I know that I can't help it.
Most people call this a "Brain Fog", but me, of course, I've gotta find some kinda humor in everything! Therefore, I've named this m.s. irritation a "Brain Fart"!🤣
I hope you'll find a good & honest neurologist that will listen to you & won't "brush you off" because of your young age.
God's many blessings for you & your family💝 I'll pray for you! Ashley Faith

    1. "Brain fart" sounds so much less threatening, . Thanks for chiming in Wishing you the best! - Lori (Team Member)

  4. Humor is one of the things that helps me get through this "insane" brain disease! I'm so grateful I was raised around some legendary, sarcastic comedians!🤣💝😂 I sure loved them so much💕
