New here but not alone.

Greetings. I'm new to this MS community and I just want to make sure i'm not alone here like many of us feel. My story is long with MS so I'll make it short as I can.
My first introduction to MS was when my Mother was diagnosed in the very early 80's almost late 70's. I was in the late single digit age, so I got to go to all the doctors appnt's and hear all the stuff we even hear today. Here sister my aunt was diagnosed in late 80's early 90's so here we go again then in the early 2000's my cousin her daughter was diagnosed, so mother nature to make sure I was not left out made sure I got diagnosed about 10 years ago. So being told all the years it doesn't run in the family was a nice slap. On my mothers side I also have another aunt, 1 uncle and a male cousin with CMT which is close to MS, but different.
The alone part is I have a son and dealing with all this with 1 side the family takes it out of new.
Need some advice on who to contact for something like this?

  1. Hi . Wow. If ever there was an argument for a hereditary component to MS, you've got one. That is a lot of MS for one family. I am a little unsure about the advice you are looking for. Are you looking for financial resources or medical/psychological help? The National MS Society has a wonderful service called Ask a Navigator that you might find helpful. Here is a link: https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Resources-Support/Find-Doctors-Resources. Looking forward to hearing more from you. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I think what I’m looking for is anyone else going through this first is who do I contact to see about a genetic marker. I did reach out to MS Society and they help in many ways but my last call the person said I must be in a hot spot

      1. I see, . That is a legitimate concern for you, for sure. At this point, researchers have no solid evidence that MS is hereditary, however, they do believe people can inherit genes that make them predisposed to MS. Here is an article from one of our advocates about MS and heredity that explains it better than I can: https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/heredity-genetics-family. I hope this helps. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. Awesome thanks

      1. My relatives on both sides of the family had MS. Of course, I was not told of it when they were alive.

        1. People really seemed to keep that stuff to themselves years ago, didn't they, ? It's hard to get support if no one knows you need it. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
