Stem Cell Treatment - Legit or not?

Hi Everyone,

I had a question regarding stem cell treatment and would respect your opinions.

I've recently come across an article on the news in the UK. It's regarding a company called Swiss Medica based in Serbia. They offer stem cell therapy for primary progressive patients such as myself. Here are a couple of videos on it:

The patient is experiencing the exact same issues I am currently experiencing and appears to have improved greatly.

What are your thoughts on it? Particularly looking to hear from anyone who has had this treatment or has some insight into it.

I've asked my neurologist who said don't do it but then he says no to everything..

  1. Hi, !

A few years back, it seemed like stem cell therapy was the next big thing. I don't know why the buzz seems to have died down a bit, but I don't read as much about it now. That said, it's not to say that it's not a viable treatment option. Perhaps the funding and research has dried up a bit? I don't know.

We have had a couple of community members pursue HSCT and I will link their stories here. This is one member's story -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/first-steps-confessions-hsct-survivor. Also, here's one part of Jenny's experience with HSCT -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/hsct-treatment. I can only sharea few links in my comment, so let me know if you need me to find the other parts to Jenny's story.

You have the right to pursue any treatment you would like (well, as long as it's legal). Whether your doctor agrees or not, you should have the final say in how to treat your condition. But, going to another country for treatment of course comes with additional risk factors. And, there's always the question of whether or not insurance will cover a procedure. You need to do what is best for you and I hope your continuing research offers you some clarity on how to proceed.

  2. Thanks so much Erin. I really appreciate the time taken to write out such a thoughtful reply. I'll review the links and see how that alters my consideration.

    1. , no problem! I just wish I had more recent information and conversations to direct you towards!

  3. I follow a guy on youtube. His nickname is the Sherriff of Baghdad. He went to a place in Panama and while he doesn't have MS to my knowledge, it did alleviate pain associate with other injuries. I had been contemplating on doing it but the one in Panama is like 20k. I have a range of other issues like RA, I had a new fusion, three ankle surgeries and some sort of blood disorder to where i have to take blood thinners the rest of my life. 20K is a lot but I am only 44 and if it could add some life in my years, I would consider doing it. If I decide to, I will let you know.

I also think having some realistic expectations is probably a important part of it.
